Kanau is released!

Hello, it's Chattercap!

Kanau is OUT! It's the sequel to the horror/romance game that I released last year, Karamu. It's set 11 years before the original game and details how Raku and Nelli first met.

Synopsis:

On the eve of his tenth birthday, Rakuo Kumode undergoes his family’s “initiation rite.” When he bucks against his family traditions, he has an encounter that will change the course of his life forever…in good and bad ways.

A story about two broken children finding each other.

Features

  • Illustrated entirely with Live2D-style animated CGs and comic book-style panels
  • 7 hand-drawn backgrounds, 13 CGs and 18 comic-book style panels
  • ~12k words (about 45-60 minutes of playtime) of a kinetic story (without any choices)
  • Fully voice acted by lovely and talented VAs! (Thank you so much for working with me!)
  • Quality of life features (including multiple fonts and font sizes and dark/light reading modes)

Some additional build notes:

Since I released Karamu in summer last year, I've migrated from Unity Engine to Godot. Unfortunately, the version of Godot that I use does not support Windows-32 bit builds, and Android is also currently not supported. As soon as Android support is added, I'll work on a port. Until then, I'll only be releasing for the main three platforms: Windows, MacOS, and Linux. Note that I currently do not have access to either a MacOS or a Linux machine, so those builds are completely untested. If you run into ANY issues at all, please let me know in the comments below. I'll try to work on a fix as soon as possible.

What's next on the docket for me?

In around a week I'll release a postmortem devlog for Kanau that talks about the conception and development (and the mysterious meaning of the title, ooohhhh~) Now that Kanau is released, I'll be working on Hanasu, the last entry in the trilogy! It'll take place a few months after Karamu, and it will tie up loose ends from both Kanau and Karamu. However, for now I'm just working on Hanasu's script; I'm taking a bit of a break from Karamu to work on another game, MINDMINDMIND, for NanoRenO2024! It's a psychological yandere game, approximately 20k words with two endings. I plan to release it around March 31st.

Synopsis:

There is a man who follows you. You call him Geist. He has followed you for years, but no one else can see him. He follows, and he whispers. He wants to keep you to himself, and when you meet a new boy at college, he’ll do anything to make sure you stay in his grasp.

I'll be dedicating most of March to MMM due to the short turnaround time for the jam, but after that I'll be shifting my attention briefly to The Deepwater Witch. The full version will release sometime in April! After that I'll focus on Hanasu and my fantasy project, Actala.

Thank you for reading! :)

Hi, I started playing this and I really like it so far. But the game freezes and doesn't progress further when I'm at the part after the girl puts Raku in the glass cage. I tried quitting and starting again with skips but game froze at the same part again. I'm playing on Windows-64. Is there a way I can fix it?

(game gets stuck at this line)

Oh, that's really strange, hm...I haven't come across that bug before. I've attached a save file that starts on the line right after this one here, just download and drag it to "User/AppData/Roaming/Chattercap/Kanau" (you might need to enable hidden folders).

Other than that maybe try re-downloading it? Possibly some of the files got corrupted during the download?
